Riding a bike has been an activity people partake in daily to travel place to place without constantly using cars. This is especially true when getting to school on time everyday. Although arriving to school by driving or walking are alternatives, riding a bike provides greater mental and physical health towards students and staff, as well as providing environmental benefits.
The benefits of biking are countless when concerning transportation methods for arriving to school. Biking daily to school has put greater emphasis on the physical health of students, as they are low impact workouts on their bodies, increases stamina and is time-efficient, as riding a bike replaces time spent on driving vehicles with exercise instead. “Well, it [biking] keeps me going, it sort of energizes me...physical wise, I have good stamina, I think that definitely helps,” explained Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature teacher Mr. Larry Wells. “Certainly the bike ride in the morning helps keep me going throughout the day and gives me that energy and push,” Wells emphasized. Biking truly does have its physical perks on riders, but it also comes with the mental perks cycling to school gives to frequent riders.
The mental benefits biking has on students and staff on campus include relieving stress, raises self esteem, reduces anxiety, and various other beneficial advantages on riders. “I like the idea of having ‘me time’. It gives a sense of freedom. I can listen to music, I can think, and it is like an escape and it is really a solitary experience,” Wells elaborated, “It certainly keeps me motivated and energized… that idea of being on the bike and being able to do what you want and that sort of escapism that driving does not give you.” Sophomore Junrui Chen also explained personal mental comfort riding a bike to school daily has on him. “It make me feel good and it makes me feel happy,” Chen emphasized. Many riders believe that bike riding the personal reward biking has on their physiological state, as well as satisfying to many riders, as they allow people on campus to enjoy the lively and freeing experience bike riding has on them.
Cycling on a daily basis has many helpful advantages on the natural environment, as it uses minimal fossil fuels, reduces greenhouse gas emission and is a pollution-free mode of transportation. “It never produce gases [in the air] and it is man-powered,” Chen explained. Wells also touched on the subject of environmental advantages by expressing, “I think it does, I think it is just better for the environment. . .you look at a place like Holland and those countries who are predominantly biking. . .there are streets that cars are not allowed on and just for their [people’s] bikes. They make barriers on the street to ensure safety,” he describes. Biking has not only many impactful benefits on our health,but it also leaves benefits on the environment.
Riding a bike has been one of the most popular methods of traveling one place to another with ease daily without consistently driving cars, especially arriving to school. The benefits of a rider’s lifestyle as well as their physical, mental, and environmental impact on their lives are as endless as the feeling of joy and energy every bike rider experiences.
